This Playful 236-Square-Foot Paris Apartment Makes the Most of Every Inch

Four years ago when Ekhi Busquet and Matthieu Vergote (along with their 3-year-old child, Kaïs) first saw the 236-square-foot former maid’s quarters (built in 1880) that would become their home, they were immediately intrigued. 

“There was nothing,” Ekhi wrote of the space at the time Apartment Therapy first toured their home. “No water, no electricity, no furniture, no toilet. It was a shed that an artist used to paint in daylight.” 

Although there were some definite drawbacks, the couple couldn’t help but fall in love with the tall ceilings and rectangular-shaped layout. It seems that the could-be dealbreakers were what made Ekhi and Matthieu sign on the dotted line to purchase the apartment. 

So, the couple set out to reimagine and redesign the home to fit their family. They wanted a neo-rustic home that was full of color. Corentine Bellon helped bring that to life by managing the project based on Ekhi and Matthieu’s designs. 

“We love creative challenges; the more constraints there are, the better it is for creativity! Transforming 22 m² (or 236 square feet) into an apartment with all the family features was the challenge of this place,” Ekhi explained.
