Eight photos just weren’t enough when it came to seeing a peek of Natalie Papier’s Illinois house. An interior designer and one half of Home Ec., a vintage and eclectic interior design company.

As Natalie wrote in her house call: “Our home is a historical Victorian in Oak Park filled with love and eclectic pieces we have curated over the years. It’s a mix of our family’s quirks and personalities. We have a 10-year-old son, Kellen, and a 7-year-old daughter, Maddie. My husband, Alan, and I have a love for art and music and we love incorporating that into our home. It’s a creative space where we can truly express ourselves.”

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Eclectic with a twist on vintage-turned-modern!

Inspiration: Very inspired by art, color, and patterns.

Favorite Element: How bright and cheery our home is.

Biggest Challenge: Working with the character of a Victorian, giving it an updated feel while staying true to the bones of the home.

Biggest Indulgence: Our attic renovation. It was a completely raw space that we transformed into our family room.

Best Advice: Don’t fight the character of these older homes! Stay true to your own style while respecting the bones of the home. Vintage loves vintage! Mix it up with eclectic pieces that stand the test of time instead of what’s just on trend at the moment.

Reclaimed wood is from the old sub-floor that we reused. Bar stools were a score from a local brewery that was getting rid of them. The radiator is from a friend’s gut renovation that we reused in our home after painting brass. Floors and beams are all reclaimed wood.
