Camila Amortegui has been an art director at Wayfair for seven years, and while her home style has evolved through time she says there’s one thing that’s always stayed the same: “My belief that a home should bring you joy, be fun, and feel like there’s life in it.”

“As a creative, it’s essential for me to live in a space that inspires and challenges my imagination,” Camila continues. “Because I work from home, my environment plays a huge role in keeping me engaged and energized.”

Camila describes the living room as small but mighty. "It's where we spend most of the time and the central part of the home."

But when Camila first bought this three-bedroom, 1205-square-foot house in Charlotte, North Carolina, two years ago, it wasn’t quite an invigorating environment. Camila describes the space as “painted in a tan color” and that it “had no life to it.” She says the exterior was a light gray and white trim. “It was a very generic-looking home,” she states.

“We’ve lived here for the past two years, although at first I wasn’t sure it was the right fit,” Camila writes. “I had a vision of what I wanted, and this house didn’t immediately match. But its location in the city — and the fact that it’s right across the street from my brother and his family — made it impossible to pass up. Our spring and summer days are spent with all the kids playing in the backyard and making lots of family memories, which is all that matters to us.”

Camila and her two kids, Simone (9) and Isaac (8), have been able to infuse the home with lots of personality. “My home is a true reflection of our family — vibrant, creative, and ever-evolving,” Camila describes. “Color is at the heart of it all. I’ve always had a deep love for color and patterns, and over time my kids have embraced it too, or they just kind of put up with it haha. They know I love color and art and they just kind of let me do my thing and experiment. When it comes to their spaces we do collaborate and I make sure to include things they want. We compromise!”

Resources

Camila explains that the house's exterior paint update "was a birthday present to myself and I hired painters to paint the home a black/green color and a bright Kelly green door. That made such a difference!"

"The front porch is my favorite space to hang out," Camila explains. "It really just makes me so happy. Kids love playing and lounging on our Colombian hammock and we love spending time eating, dancing, doing yoga, and playing LEGOs. Most of the time I am working from there and taking the occasional summer nap. One con about the home is that it could use more windows to get light in, so sometimes it does get a little dark so I try to hang out outside in the porch as much as possible."
