When John and Claire Champion bought this house in a village on the outskirts of Chester, U.K., it was originally a small-ish dormer bungalow. But over the eight years they’ve owned the place, they’ve made a few changes. Firstly, they extended the house, adding three bedrooms upstairs, as well as converted the garage space into an extra bedroom and a snug.

They replumbed, rewired, and refitted (and upcycled) the kitchen and two bathrooms, as well. “It’s taken around six years to get to this stage, with the majority of the budget being spent on building works and installations,” writes Claire, who posts about her home on Instagram under the account, @charnwoodtowers.

When it came to decorating the space, Claire says they did most of it themselves and mostly using secondhand finds and IKEA pieces they’ve added their own personality to. “Upcycling furniture is definitely a passion of [mine]; it’s such a great way to get a unique piece on a budget,” explains Claire.

My style is very much eclectic; there is a common thread of mid-century modern across many of the rooms, but I think the thing that ties everything together is the use of color and pattern. I’m not afraid to have different design styles and influences in each room, I just design based on the space and the feeling I want to evoke,” Claire admits. “I love spending time at home; more often than not, I’ll be upcycling or crafting. I love an opportunity to be creative.”
