A Photographer Gave This 150-Year-Old French Farmhouse a Bold New Look Without Losing Its Soul
“It’s been a dream of ours (especially mine) for years to buy inspiring property and make it into something we love but can share with others,” begins photographer Alana Range, who, with her husband Adam, purchased this 2700-square-foot, 150-year-old house in the south of France.
“My husband Adam and I bought it in the summer of 2025, got the keys in December, and immediately hosted Christmas for our family in a house we’d owned for three weeks. We are not people who do things slowly,” Alana writes of the traditional stone farmhouse they purchased for $428K (375K Euros). The couple named the property “Le Beau Pierre,” after Adam’s father Peter, who passed away earlier in 2025.
The house was also meaningful to Alana and her family, too. “I grew up in Canada with a farm where my family spent weekends for over 60 years (like a real, functioning farm!),” she writes. “It was recently sold and Le Beau Pierre reclaims that magic a little.”
When Alana and Adam first got the keys, they described the farmhouse as “dated, full of carpet,” and with “impersonal choices.” So they ripped out carpet with the help of friends and family who came to visit the first few months that they owned the house.
While they’ve definitely added their personality to the space, Alana says there’s still a lot they want to do (the silver kitchen is “gonna go” Alana writes), but today, “we feel the house is playful, considered, and comfortable.”
The family lives in Berlin most of the year, but uses the four-bedroom house on school holidays and over the summer, and rents it to other families the rest of the year.
