Melanie Porthun immediately fell in love with the old tiles and windows of this 1830-square-foot apartment in an Art Nouveau house in Hamburg’s Altona area. All of the home’s bedrooms are spacious, which is perfect for Melanie and husband, Angar, and their two kids, ages 3 and 8.

“We really were dreaming of a place where we could invite lots of people and have an open house,” Melanie begins. “We suddenly realized that all of our renovating plans in our old flat would not generate more room for a family kitchen or another kid’s room so we had to start looking for a home with more space. It went all really, really quick, and it was pure luck.”

Melanie continues the story of how they got the home: “The apartment was listed on all the usual platforms. Two other families were also interested, and it was just about who could get quicker appointments with the notary or the loan of the bank quicker. The Realtor told all the families at this point it’s just about who is faster. We hated it but proceeded, and only 15 minutes before the notary appointment we got all the paperwork about the loan from the bank. It was really, really exciting, and we were so relieved since we have looked in a very short amount of time (two or three months) at so many houses and flats, and nothing really was a good fit also regarding prices and sizes.”

The family has lived in this apartment for five years now, and in that time, the decor has transformed into a colorful wonderland. “Now our taste is curated, and everything revolves around color,” Melanie writes. “We like to invest our money in art or design and have a weakness for handicrafts and souvenirs from travels and flea markets. I love finding furniture and accessories on vintage platforms and many things here have been with us all our lives. Nevertheless, there is always movement within the color worlds and the little things.”

Thanks, Melanie!
