When textile designer Tamasyn Gambell and her husband, Jamie, found themselves having to share their bedroom with their 2-year-old son in their last small flat, they decided it was time to look for a bigger place … and maybe a garden, too.

“We started looking in Leytonstone, which is close to lots of green space and the forest but still close to the city,” begins Gambell. “The houses are beautiful but many have had the Victorian features ripped out and the rooms squared off to make modern and often soulless spaces.”
After a year of searching, they came across this 1185-square-foot, three-bedroom house that had been neglected and needed a lot of work, but the “light and feel looked like just the thing we’d been looking for,” she explains.
“As soon as we came to the street we knew this was our house!” Gambell continues. “It had all of the original features and we stepped out into the garden where the grass was well above our 2-year-old’s head and it kept going further and further back! You couldn’t see the end of it, as it was so overgrown, but it was bigger than any of the ones we’d seen and we couldn’t believe it! It felt like a secret garden waiting to be brought back to life. The whole feel of the house was welcoming and calm and the light and space was amazing. It was love at first sight!”
