For the past ten years or so, Beni Ourain style Moroccan rugs have dominated design. Made of hand-knotted wool and typically featuring a zig zag or diamond motif in minimalist black-and-white (or cream-and-brown) colors, you often couldn’t scroll through Instagram or Pinterest without seeing one of these guys. Well, the pendulum appears to be swinging away from that understated aesthetic, which will still always be relevant for its simplicity. But right now, designers and brands are all about embracing color drenched and saturated area rugs featuring some of those same intriguing geometric shapes Moroccan textiles are known for.

To be fair, many authentic new and vintage boucherouite rugs and some berber rugs from Morocco have always been colorful. They just haven’t been as popular as the often neutral, undyed Beni Ourains, so their influence on interiors hasn’t been fully felt until now. This shift probably has something to do with the fact that maximalism is back. Rainbow colored rugs are anything but understated, but there is a way to work them into a neutral scheme, if that’s more your speed.

Ready to go all in on the trend? One of these Moroccan-inspired saturated area rugs will certainly brighten up your living room or bedroom. Feeling more comfortable to just dip your toe into the trend? Then go with something small for a space like your entryway or kitchen. Here are some favorite vibrant but cozy rugs to bring this look home.
