Melissa and Ruben got the keys to this 1939-era house in November of 2016, and moved in officially in February 2017. And since then, they’ve added a ton of color, whimsy, and clever design ideas in the Rotterdam-based space that’s also home to kids Sam (11) and Bo (6).

"I am also in love with how the dining room turned out. That was one of my more recent projects," Melissa writes. "I'm especially happy with the new pink cabinet, the new dining table, and the wall art by Werk aan de Muur. The light fixture is a vintage Laterna Danica. The Chair S16 is a de Machinekamer

“When we first saw the house, we fell in love instantly with the round front door. When we walked through it, we immediately felt: this is our house. There were also a lot of old details left that we loved, like the stained windows,” begins Melissa.

The shoe cabinet is Tylko, and the brown coat rack is vintage. The custom pillow is from Nofruit.nl. The other coat rack is IKEA PS 2026. The wall paint colors are from Flexa and are "Blueberry Dream" and "Bright Skies."

It’s those old details — and the history of the home — that the family really loves. “Before us, there were nuns living in this house. It was owned by a church. You could see it by all the crosses that were still in the house, and all the wiring through the house. It turned out that all the nuns had their own room with their own cable phone,” she explains.

The couch is the Model Finn BySidde, and the coffee table is vintage. They made the wall light. The floor lamp is IKEA PS 2026. The record player is Argon Audio TT MK2. The vintage cabinet and chair are Pastoe. The wall vase is wandravioli - de keramiek boetiek, the ceramic green shelf is Form Keramiek, and the ceramic hook is from Rond by Soof. The lounge chair is the Almelo from Jotex.

But while the family loved the quirks, they didn’t love that it looked so old and had what Melissa describes as “grandma style,” with dark woods and lots of beiges and browns. There were “no colors,” Melissa writes. “And in the bathroom there was a stool and handle to shower. It was all clean and neat, but aged.”

The bunk bed is the Tobi from Petit Puk. The Riso print "Blij Blij Blij" is from Agoe Agoe. The Letter B wall lamp is Verslingerd aan hout. The Smiley wall plate is from The Clay Shaper. They made the hanging clothing rack. The moon chair is from wigiwama. The blanket is from slowdown studio. The book rack is from Toddie. The smiley mini carpet is a souvenir from Brazil.

Today, the home is the opposite of dark, brown, and dated. It’s light. It’s colorful. It’s “Scandinavian, with a vintage touch,” Melissa writes. “And playful.” She says nothing was designed according to any rules — it is “just what feels right for us.”

The shelf is from IKEA, the pink vase is Foekje Fleur, and the checkered can and the colorful cutting boards are from Hay. The chunky cup is Gustaf Westman.

Amazingly, they’ve made many of the things in the home themselves. “We love DIY,” Melissa admits. “That also means that sometimes it is not fully perfect. But it makes it ours.”

The bedding in the primary bedroom is Snurk Amsterdam.

When renovating, Melissa says they had a must-have list and a nice-to-have list. “We thought we would have to make some tough choices — for example, between having a herringbone floor and a fireplace — but in the end, we managed to include everything we wanted,” she explains.

The blue cabinet is Tylko, the wallpaper is from Photowall Sweden, and the pink wall rack and desk in the office is JYSK. The room divider is handmade from an IKEA base.

“To make that possible, we did cut costs in certain areas, such as the plastering. Looking back, that’s probably one of the things I would do differently next time. We also did a lot of the work ourselves to save money.”

There's actually a hidden cabinet in the bathroom. "The bathroom is quite small, so we needed to find creative ways to find storage. Thats why we made an apothecary-style cabinet in between two walls, where we can store a lot of toiletries," she writes.

Although the family still works on home projects even to this day, the “finished” result of the home is a highly personal space that reflects the people living in it. “I am proud of all the things we made ourselves. It always starts with an idea and when that idea turns out to actually work and look great, that is amazing,” she writes.

The green cabinet is handmade, and the colorful wall cabinets are from IKEA in their other son's bedroom. The wallpaper is from Rebell Walls. They hand-made the desk. The bed is also from Petit Puk. The bedding is from Snurk Amsterdam, and the chair is a Shappy Modular play sofa. The hanging chair is vintage IKEA, and the clothing cabinet is JYSK. The pin board is handmade, and the wooden wall hooks are LEGO. The dark green paint color is Klint "Borneo (98)" and "Early Blue (64).
