This Vibrant, Artistic 495-Square-Foot Mexican Home Was Renovated for $20K
Brenda Rocha and her husband have been living in this one-bedroom apartment for seven years, which they renovated for around $20K: Nestled in the heart of the captivating city of Queretaro, Mexico, lies Casa de Colores — a testament to ingenious design and excellent craftsmanship within a modest 46 square meters.
As a Mexican-Australian architect hailing from the vibrant city of Melbourne, I have an unwavering passion for the intricacies of tiny living and the finesse of compact design spaces. In 2015 I took on the challenge of acquiring a 200-year-old house. With a deep yearning to establish a cherished haven for our return trips, my vision began to take shape.
Navigating the challenges posed by its heritage-listed status, we embarked on a creative journey. This culminated in the realization of a meticulously crafted loft space, thoughtfully designed to meld modern comfort with historic character.
Meanwhile, the front portion of the property underwent its own rebirth. It has been ingeniously repurposed into an independent, self-sufficient dwelling, inviting us to return and rejuvenate in our beloved Queretaro once a year.
Allow me to offer a glimpse into the manifestation of these dreams — plans painstakingly brought to life through unwavering dedication and artistic finesse.
This home is our Mexican haven. My husband and I have meticulously designed and selected every single detail, including the artwork, finishes, and accessories throughout the house. It’s truly a heartfelt embrace from us to the world!
Describe your home’s style in five words or fewer: Mexican, vibrant, artistic, craftsmanship, and colourful.
What is your favorite room and why? Our amazing 200-year-old living room. We love hosting parties, and everyone is always welcome — snack on the table and mezcal and tequila for everyone!
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? Our Acapulco chairs. They are vibrant and perfect to watch the sunset on our rooftop.
Any advice for creating a home you love? Use your hands as much as possible when building it. Get dirty! It is fun!
Thanks, Brenda!
