Before: Large brown table

Office furniture, while it may be durable and utilitarian, isn’t exactly known for being attractive, but a local office that’s closing, undergoing a remodel, or moving locations might actually be a great resource for a statement dining table.

Case in point: This brown bulky behemoth conference table that Kelby Mayberry (@the.modberry) found on OfferUp, which once led more corporate life before it lived in her dining room.

Its bank-lobby-brown finish wasn’t quite the look Kelby was going for, but the table itself had held up well over time, save for a few chips around the edges. Plus, it had a cool silhouette, so Kelby and her husband, Dylan, decided to transform it for about $100. (And the table was about $80 on OfferUp.)

“We just sanded down the top to prime and then painted it black using Milk Paint,” she explains. At first, they used a sprayer over the top without sanding, but the top was splotchy, so they decided to put in extra effort to sand, prime, and paint.

For the legs, they used leftover pole wrap from another project and glued it around the legs, then used a nail gun to reinforce. Kelby painted over the pole wrap with a brush, but she says she might go back and redo the legs with sanding, priming, and fresh black paint someday, too.

For now, though, her $100 DIY made the table much more contemporary. “Now it’s a sleek, modern dining table,” Kelby writes on Instagram. She says she’s proud that she and Dylan achieved such a high-end look from such boring beginnings.

“I love how the table looks with the leopard wallpaper,” she adds. (Her fun peel-and-stick paper is from Rocky Mountain Decals, and her cool chairs are from Amazon.)
