Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: Our home is 121 years old and is one-of-a-kind in our area, combining the outer aesthetic of a Greek Revival with the interior footprint of a craftsman. We (my husband Dustin and I) have shared three homes together and have renovated them all top to bottom.
We combined tons of DIY projects with vintage furniture finds to create a space for ourselves as well as our four boys and one brand-new baby girl. We also share our space with two rescue dogs, Gulliver and Wednesday. We love our home not only for who is in it but because of where it is. We live in a small, historic area in the middle of Concord, North Carolina, which has tons of small-town charm. We know all of our neighbors and live right next door to our community school. We love to walk around our neighborhood and look at the many beautiful old homes we have around us!
I am a weird mashup of dark and whimsical. (I’m a true Gemini through and through.) I think you can definitely spot this through my home with dark walls, leather furniture, and pops of color. Throw in some odd decor touches like a giant medical poster, and you’ve got me!
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: A moody, dark Wes Anderson vibe.
What is your favorite room and why? My favorite room is by far my “formal” living room, also known as the lady room or the casket room. Historically speaking, this room was the room where a body would be held for wake before a funeral service — the windows in this room are double size so that they could slide the casket out and onto a waiting carriage. I call it the lady room because I have amassed a collection of mid-century oil portraits of women that I’ve hung and I adore!
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? A set of vintage badminton rackets to hang on the wall. I found them at a local Salvation Army.
Any advice for creating a home you love? My advice is to put what you love in your home. You love that bright yellow sofa you saw online? Put it in your house. It will make you smile every time you see it. If you’re worried that it is “too much,” balance it out with quieter pieces and neutral accent colors. Our homes should be a reflection of ourselves, what we love and what brings us joy!
