Even though IKEA was founded all the way back in 1943, it’s still a favorite of designers today. Spotted in many house tours designed by pro interior designers, IKEA pieces are often featured simply because they’re so stylish and affordable. As Amy Peltier, creative director and CEO of Peltier Interiors, says, “Like so many designers, I love its unique combination of great design at an affordable price point.”

Peltier says that she uses IKEA in her own designs primarily for accessories, storage, and tabletop decor. She also says that $50 can absolutely get you some serious bang for your buck.

“A little definitely goes a long way,” she says. “At many big-box stores, items under $50 are poorly made and overly trendy, meaning they’re either going to break or look out of style quickly. From my point of view, even if we’re focusing on spending less money, you still want to seek out timeless designs that aren’t destined for the landfill. IKEA has that.”

I asked Peltier what she would purchase with a budget of $50 at IKEA — and the word to describe her tabletop-focused picks is “timeless.”

At IKEA, it’s surprisingly easy to find items that look a lot more expensive than they are. Case in point? These side plates with just enough visual interest.

“These classic plates just do not look affordable,” Peltier says. “The subtle, ruffled edge and clean white finish are so incredible — whether you want to bring a timeless feeling to a farmhouse table or a softer sense of warmth to a more contemporary environment.”

For a decorative touch that looks equal parts traditional and modern, look no further than these IKEA candlesticks in black, which Peltier believes really create ambiance at a table.

“There’s no better way to create that intimate feeling around the dinner table like candlesticks,” she says. “This trio of black candle holders for taper candles are skinny enough to provide that magical glow without blocking conversation across the table. The uneven heights make them even more visually appealing.”

Sure, you can go with clear, classic vases to place around your house … or you can choose one in a head-turning green hue that’s sure to pop.

Peltier points out that this stunning emerald green vase costs less than a latte, saying, “The color and shape are perfect for a dining table, whether alone or grouped, for flowers or for small branches.”
