There’s nothing more devastating than investing in a chic pair of wine glasses — perhaps a set for your red wines and one for your white wines — only to place them in the dishwasher, roll the rack inwards, and simultaneously shatter your stems. But according to an Instagram clip going viral, there is a simple step that you can implement into your cleanup routine to avoid this unfortunate fate.

Recently, a video on social media caught a lot of attention — nearly 7.4 million views — because its creator demonstrated a simple dishwasher feature that most people aren’t aware of.

It turns out that most dishwashers get designed with a button that you can click to lower the top rack to fit your wine glasses in without worrying about breaking them. This simple step takes two seconds to complete but can save you tons of money and the disappointment of shattered drinkware.

People on social media could not get over this realization. One person commented on the post, “Wow, are you kidding all these years? Seriously, why didn’t anyone tell me???” While another user mentioned, “I broke so many glasses over the years in the dishwasher.”

It’s important to note that not all dishwashers come with this handy feature. The easiest way to check if your appliance contains this useful button is to examine your model or read the user manual, which you can also find online if you accidentally tossed yours out.

There are plenty of routes you can take to help preserve your drinkware when cleaning it. Dishwashers contain a button labeled “glass,” which you can press to lower the water pressure in your appliance to avoid compromising your precious cups.
