12 Instagram Accounts to Follow for Diverse Wedding Inspiration
On Oct. 3, 2019, I was standing in a London rose garden, looking at the full moon, when my partner of four years turned to me and asked me to marry him. I had always scoffed at friends who promised that this would be one of the most joyful occasions of my life, but I’m happy to report they were all right. I have never felt so elated as I did on that evening.
As soon as we got back home to Jersey City, I dove into planning. I hadn’t grown up fantasizing about my wedding and wasn’t sure where to begin, so I decided to search Instagram to gather ideas for the shape and style of my wedding dress. I’m a quarter Indonesian, and I don’t have Western features or skin tone, but with more than 20 million posts filed under the #weddinginspiration hashtag, I figured it would be easy to find a bride who looked like me.
I was wrong. The majority of the posts that the algorithm displayed for me at the time featured white, straight couples. Occasionally, a South Asian or Black couple would appear, but for the most part, my experience searching Instagram for bridal ideas served only to remind that social media overwhelmingly promotes a wedding aesthetic that favors thin, white women—hardly universally flattering to or inclusive of all skin tones, face shapes, body types, and gender identities. In the afterglow of our engagement, I didn’t expect that anything could deflate my excitement, but I closed the app discouraged and disheartened.
My wedding has been postponed indefinitely because of the pandemic, and I’m sure that so many other couples are in a similar position; when I do pick planning back up, I don’t want to feel like I have to erase my body and my heritage to achieve narrow, exclusionary definitions of the ideal wedding.
