While I’ve always loved trying out new cleaning products, dish soap is one of the few things I don’t like to experiment with. Even when Dawn Platinum Powerwash Dish Spray was at its peak virality, I decided against it. Recently, however, I finally gave this famous spray a try and was truly impressed by its convenient and effective cleaning power.

However, as much as I came to love this product, I wasn’t in love with the extra plastic and the price, especially since all the regular dish soaps I had purchased in the past were under $3.

I figured if anywhere had a solution to my dilemma, it’d be TikTok — and I was right! I not only found a DIY recipe to make my own Dawn Powerwash refill, I was able to use the dish soap I already had on hand, plus a couple of other pantry ingredients.

While most of the recipes I found required Dawn dish soap, I only had a bit left over of Everspring Lemon Mint Dish Soap. I followed the instructions, filling the Powerwash bottle with ¼ cup of my dish soap, 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, 10 drops of essential oil (despite being an optional step, I thought some peppermint essential oil would enhance the scent of the already minty fresh dish soap), and filled the rest with cold filtered water.

To make sure this worked just as well as the original formula, I sprayed it on a plate that was covered in grease and sauce. I let the solution sit for about 15 seconds and used the soft side of my sponge to wipe it off.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the grease practically disappear, and once I rinsed it off completely, the plate was so sparkling clean I could actually see my reflection in it!

Although Dawn does sell Powerwash refills, making a DIY refill seems like the more simple, eco-friendly, and cost-effective choice. Plus, with the addition of some essential oil drops, you can create your own seasonal scents not found in stores.
