Sometimes we want a movie to surprise us. Other times, we want to know what to expect. Maybe we’re feeling sad already and want some cheering up, or maybe we have a particular trigger we want to avoid.

That’s where DoesTheDogDie.com comes in. It catalogues movies, TV shows, books, video games, and more along 70 categories, including the death of a dog, the death of a parent, cancer, and car crashes. Many of the categories are quite specific, and if you don’t see the one you’re looking for, you can request it.

Within each category, you can see results for whether the trigger does or doesn’t happen (in other words, media to avoid and media that is safe). Each movie has a report for the category with more detail so you can make an informed choice. Under the category “Does the dog die?”, for example, there’s this description of Isle of Dogs:

“*The* dog doesn’t die, nor do any characters we have grown to care about, but one or two background dogs are shown to have died off-screen. The movie is meant to be satisfying overall to anyone who cares about dogs, as the dogs are given a happy ending.”

Other users can then vote “yes” or “no” on the report and add their own comments so you can have a crowd-sourced opinion.

You can also search for a specific movie to see all the categories you can expect when you watch it.

Does The Dog Die is available both on your browser and in the App Store.
