“My partner Matt and I live in an adorable little house from the 1920s located in the neighborhood within a neighborhood of Angelino Heights in the Echo Park area of east Los Angeles,” begins Lydia Genner of the two-bedroom, 800-square-foot home the couple have rented for $3,600 a month for two years.

“It’s full of gigantic, old Victorian homes including the house from ‘Thriller’ and the TV show Charmed. Matt is the creative director for a strategic branding agency as well as an amazing musician/DJ and collage artist. I am a writer for television and film. We share our home with our two fur babies Buddy (6), a rat terrier/min pin mix who might be the most handsome boy ever and the grande dame of our family Penny (15), a schnauzer/terrier who suffers no fools.”

“I think the greatest compliment I’ve gotten about our home is that when people walk in, they say that it feels like us. Both Matt and I are people who LOVE stuff, AKA we have more than our fair share of knickknacks. While we tend to be neutral dressers, we adore using color and pattern when decorating. We have a ‘yours, mine, and ours’ art collection that covers almost every inch of our walls. Matt jokes that we’re going to have to start hanging things from the ceiling, but I’m of the mind that if I love it, I’ll find a way.”

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? "We just got back from a week in Mexico City where we found all kinds of treasures. My two favorite are an original drawing by Leobardo Huerta and the other is a handprinted wooden bird mask with a 5 inch long beak. They were both found at the most amazing flea market with vendors selling vintage furniture, art, clothes, and jewelry. It's held every Sunday in the city and is literally six city blocks."

And when it comes to sharing advice on how to decorate a home, Lydia says two bits of wisdom come to mind: “Don’t decorate your home for anyone else … they don’t live there.” And “[d]on’t confuse getting something with getting the right thing. Good things come to those who wait.”
