Between chocolate and gummy candy, chocolate takes the throne in 2021, with 28 states preferring chocolate candies, like Kit Kat, Reese’s Pieces, and Milky Way, while 22 states have a passion for fruit-flavored and gummy candies such as Sour Patch Kids, Tootsie Pops, and Swedish Fish.
Chocolate, miniature or otherwise, is the candy of choice in more than half the states, and particularly on the east coast and in the midwest. Twix is a firm favorite in Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Utah, and Wisconsin, while Kit Kat is enjoyed the most in Arizona, Connecticut, Maryland, Michigan, and New Mexico.
One-off chocolate-coated favorites include Smarties (Delaware), 3 Musketeers (Vermont), Peanut M&Ms (Kansas), and Crunch (Hawaii).
The south, along with the west coast, has a taste for fruit-flavored candies, gummy candies, and other non-chocolate candies. Skittles are the candy of choice in Alabama, Arkansas, and Georgia, while Jolly Rancher Hard Candy is the sweet treat of choice in California and Texas.
Starburst is a favorite among Louisiana residents, while Iowa and Nebraska are lovers of Tootsie Pops.
As for candy corn? It’s a fan favorite in West Virginia.
