Easton is an artsy and quirky part of Bristol that has recently been revealed as one of the 50 coolest neighborhoods in the world by Time Out. Its independent coffee shops, local art trails, multicultural food shops, and great community spirits are exactly what has attracted the creative types into the area in recent years. Illustrator Naomi Wilkinson and her photographer partner Noel Deasington have lived in this cool neighborhood for a couple of years, having bought this two-bedroom Victorian terrace back in 2017.

Their house is full of period charms like a fireplace (that goes all the way to the high ceiling) that they paired with more modern colors and patterns. There are pink walls with encaustic tiled floors in the kitchen/diner, and a half-tone painted wall boring wall in this home. “I’m very inspired by color and color palettes and this inspiration can come from art, illustration, travel, or anything visual,” Naomi explains.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Colorful

Inspiration: My dream house is the Eames house as it manages to mix modernism and beautifully crafted furniture with a feeling of comfort and creativity. I love modern furniture but not sure I could live with full modernist minimalism as I would miss color and pattern. I’m very inspired by color and color palettes and this inspiration can come from art, illustration, travel, or anything visual!

Favorite Element: Encaustic tiled floor in the kitchen even if it’s tricky to clean!

Biggest Challenge: Keeping the house vaguely presentable with two small kids!

What Friends Say: I think most of my friends like it! I think possibly the black wall in the bedroom is divisive and I’m actually planning on painting the bedroom peach, which I’m sure is equally divisive.

Biggest Embarrassment: Probably that we both don’t have much confidence or ability when it comes to DIY. It’s also tricky to find any time to do DIY with two kids under 5. Luckily we have a great friend called Stu who offers lots of help and advice.

Proudest DIY: As I said we’re not great with DIY but I did design the wallpaper in the kid’s bedroom. I designed it before my son was born and its made up of our daughter’s favorite things ( at the time she was 2) including our dog Lenny! Luckily Arthur seems to like the things in the wallpaper now, too.

Biggest Indulgence: The floor tiles in the kitchen! They were half the price of the designer concrete tiles but they took a couple of days to fit.

Best Advice: I would say live with your house for a little bit before you do any drastic or expensive renovations. Once you see how you use the house it becomes easier to see what you need or want to do and means you can add those personal little touches. Also embrace a bit of colour; it really does improve your mood.

Dream Sources: I love magazines like the World of Interiors and the French magazine Milk Decoration. Also I’ve found a lot of wise and practical advice on ”The Great Indoors” podcast.
