This Colorful Home Is Decorated Mostly with Vintage, Secondhand Finds
Kerry Davison has owned this four-bedroom house for seven months and shares it with her fiancé, 3-year-old daughter, 12-year-old daughter, and four chihuahuas: We are a family of four, plus four chihuahuas, who have just moved into our new-build home. We have lived here since it was built, seven months ago, and have spent that time thrifting and decorating and making our dream home a reality.
I am obsessed with finding vintage home decor on a budget, trawling car boot sales, charity shops, and antique markets, looking for pieces that will add interest to my home. I have a love for ’60s/’70s home decor and try to incorporate that into our home style, whilst also creating rooms that are calming for the mind and soul. I love bold pops of earthy colours and like to mix natural materials, textures, and plants in my home to create a very maximal boho style.
I think as humans our identities are forever evolving and growing, and my home definitely reflects this. My style has grown with me over the years and as I’ve learned what I love and what I’m passionate about, I’ve managed to incorporate that into my home decor. I think confidence in your style is something that comes with experience and I feel more confident with myself, and my style, at 38 than I have at any other point in my life.
Describe your home’s style in five words or fewer: Eclectic boho with pops of colour.
What is your favorite room and why? My favourite room changes hourly, depending on the sunlight coming through the house. I think each room has its own beautiful qualities, but for me, my bedroom is a sanctuary where I have created a calm and inviting space — perfect for me to switch off at the end of a busy day of being Mum.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? I’m always finding little secondhand treasures for my home. One of my recent favourites was a beautiful vintage leather Moroccan foot stool, which I bought from my brother, who is an antiques dealer.
Any advice for creating a home you love? Decorate for you, not for other people. Fill your home with things that make you happy and colours that make you smile. I like to find a few pieces I really love and then create a room based around those. A piece of artwork or bit of furniture are the perfect place to start. I like to work out from there, finding things that work together with that piece. I love mixing up textures, too, to really create depth in rooms.
Share how much it cost to furnish or design your space? We’ve decorated our house on a budget, using mostly thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace to find furniture and decor. Our big expenses were our dining table and sofas, which cost around £4,000 altogether, however pretty much everything else has been bought secondhand.
Thanks, Kerry!
