This Rare Frank Lloyd Wright Home is on the Market for $8M
A Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home is currently on the market for $8 million—making it one of the priciest Frank Lloyd Wright listings to date. The Mathews House, which is located in Atherton, California, was designed in 1950 and built in 1952. Over the last seven decades, the sprawling home has only had two previous owners, making it a rare opportunity for fans of the architect to own a piece of Lloyd Wright history. Originally designed for the Mathews family, the second owners purchased the home in 1969.
According to Realtor.com, whoever buys this impressive 1,940-square-foot Usonian home will have minimal upkeep, which is testament to Lloyd Wright’s well thought-out and study designs. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the home is set on an acre of land and is located in one of California’s most affluent areas.
The Mathews House listing agent is Monique Lombardelli of Modern Homes Realty who says that Lloyd Wright only built a couple of homes in the Bay Area. Interior photos are yet to be released, but according to Realtor.com, Lombardelli says that the three-bedroom, two-bathroom is in “amazing condition,”
“[The sellers] have maintained it perfectly. They put on a new roof and have done different work to make sure the flooring is perfect,” she said. “It was a family home, and the kids are grown and have their own homes and their own families now.”
Constructed with concrete, glass, and redwood, included in the $8 million asking price—a competitive price for the Atherton area—will be the home’s original Danish modern furnishings and built-ins. Additional major selling points include lush green gardens designed by renowned landscaper Thomas Church, and the large outdoor pool.
In 2019, a number of Lloyd Wright’s famed designs were named UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include the Unity Temple, Hollyhock House, the Herbert and Katherine Jacobs House, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
