I hate to admit it, but I probably don’t wash my bedsheets as often as I should. I wash them about every two weeks (or, if life gets hectic, it’s sometimes three). I know, I know! I’ve read all about how dust mites and bacteria can build up over time, and believe me — the last thing I want to do is climb into a bed with dirty sheets.

It looks like I’m in the majority, however. According to Mattress Advisory, the average American changes their sheets every 24 days. Yikes! I know I can be better and wash my sheets weekly, which is why I was so glad I stumbled upon a super-cute three-word phrase during an Instagram scroll.

Creator Ashley Paige Wagner very casually shared to her Instagram stories that she washes her bedsheets every Friday. The phrase she likes to use to remember to do so is simply “Fresh Sheets Friday.” Brilliant! Not only is the phrase catchy, but I also think washing your sheets on Friday is the perfect day to do it. There’s nothing better than climbing into bed with freshly washed sheets, but doing it on a Friday as you head into the weekend? Bliss.

Something so simple has been super helpful for me — especially because I’m trying hard to space out cleaning tasks throughout the week. My Sunday resets were becoming all-day events, with hardly any time for me to relax. This did nothing for my Sunday Scaries, of course, so creating a more manageable cleaning schedule is top of mind for 2025.

This is another reason why the sheets got left on the bed and never made it to the washing machine in the first place. My clothes always get first dibs when it comes to laundry, and after doing two or three loads on Sunday I simply run out of steam. Because Friday is now “Fresh Sheets Friday,” my Sunday resets are way more feasible. Hello, peace of mind!

So how often should you actually be washing your bedsheets? A good rule of thumb is weekly, which is why this phrase is so great. Be sure to include sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers (if you don’t use a top sheet) in your own “Fresh Sheets Friday,” and include comforters or quilts monthly. How often you wash your sheets can vary as well, depending on how hot of a sleeper you are, if you sleep with pets or a partner, or what sort of material your sheets are, to name a few. But in general, once a week is a good place to start.

I personally just got my hands on a bamboo sheet set from Cozy Earth that gets softer with every wash, so I’m more motivated than ever to do my laundry. Happy “Fresh Sheets Friday!”
