The galley kitchen of this Brooklyn apartment wasn't in terrible shape, especially compared to some kitchens we've seen. But the builder-blah '90s color scheme made the space seem dark and dated, and the wide-set floor tiles left lots of room for grout, which means lots of room for collecting dirt. The homeowner envisioned a remodel that would give the space a brighter, more modern style, but also one that would add more cabinet space to this small kitchen, without adding more floor space — via one simple trick.

The solution? The new kitchen cabinets are taller than the old ones, taking advantage of space that was previously unused, and drawing the eye up. For a seamless look, a piece of trim hides the gap between the top of the new cabinets and the ceiling. (Another option would be to opt for cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling, but this would've meant custom cabinets, which represent a big budget hike.)

The new cabinets are a bright white, and the backsplash is classic subway tile. The glass-front cabinet above the sink reflects the one in the old kitchen. White paint on the walls also helps to brighten the space, and the new dark countertops provide a bit of contrast.

The new floor, with minimal grout lines, is a welcome change. Pantry cabinets surrounding the fridge provide plenty of storage, and under-cabinet lighting helps to further brighten up the space. The new kitchen has a classic style that's designed to weather the years — but it also adds quite a bit of storage space, making it practical as well as beautiful.
