Before we purchased our home we already were renters in the area and we knew we wanted to stay in the neighborhood, so it was more about finding the right home for us. We took our time (and looked at lots of places). When we found this house we had an immediate sense it was our home. The house had a lot of the amenities that we were looking for: a front porch, big yard for the kids, great flow, lots of windows, natural light, open spaces, and of course mantels to decorate for every season!

As soon as I stepped on the porch I immediately started mentally decorating it for Halloween and Christmas. We are huge Halloween fans. My husband and I started dating on a Halloween night and married five years later on an Oct. 30. This year will be our 20th Halloween together!

The house is located at the end of a beautiful cul-de-sac and our home is situated in the middle of the lot, which is nice because whether we spend time on the front porch or in the backyard, it still feels very private. To top it off, we have a wonderful community where all neighbors know each other, chat in our front yards and look out for each other’s kids.

Our street has a 1950s dreamy sense of community, where kids safely can bike, walk, and play in each others yards… which also makes it a great place to decorate for and participate in Halloween!

I am a photographer [she owns B Hull Photography, a portrait and wedding photographer in Westchester County] and I love creating themes in the different parts of the house and adding new pieces to our ever-growing Halloween decor each year.

I usually start decorating on the last week of September or first week of October and usually end up having a few additions to the ever growing collection. I like taking advantage of the after Halloween sales for some of the more expensive pieces although you always run the risk of being sold out before they go on sale.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Modern, warm, coastal.

Favorite Element: The porch is one of my favorite spaces. I always loved those Southern porches with fans and swings you can decorate year around… and those items have been our latest addition to the porch. We now enjoy even more time on the front porch and have more to options to decorate!

As a photographer, I was definitely drawn to the open spaces and all the windows that provide beautiful natural light throughout the house. The backyard is very lush with tons of mature bushes and small trees that I had so much fun transplanting and reshaping it, adding pops of color across the landscape.

Biggest Challenge: My biggest challenge has definitely been one of my favorite rooms, which is rounded with a gazebo-style ceiling with windows all around. The room is right off the main bedroom and currently serves as office/yoga/massage/music room! Making it this multifunction room helped solve my dilemma!

Thanks Belkis!
