Name: Hannah & Tara
Location: Denton, Texas

(Editor’s note: It’s a delightful coincidence that this weekend’s house calls came from the same stylish spot in Texas.) My best friend Tara and I lived in a student-living apartment together with two other girls for two years before moving into this space for our senior year at The University of North Texas. We knew we would never have the opportunity to live together again after graduation, so we decided to make the most of our year.

Both Tara and I enjoy the outdoors. We pulled inspiration from the name of our complex and decided to decorate our common areas in a rustic, cottage-like theme. We wanted our home to be comfy and inviting after a long day at school or work. We loved having people over to share this space. After all, what’s a home without people you love?

Tara and I made decisions about the common areas together while we designed and organized our rooms according to our unique preferences. Tara is a designer. She pays a lot of attention to color and geometric shapes. I am a photographer. I prefer simplicity and small, meaningful details. My favorite aspect of Tara’s room is her desk. In the cubbies, she hides everything from supplies and power chords to awards and certificates she’s garnered over the years. Each object speaks to her passions, her personality, and her achievement. In my own room, I use accessories, books, and my camera equipment to bring personality to the space. My minimally-decorated bedroom is simple, clean, and functional boasting a stack of books on the dresser and a couple of photos here and there.

Our apartment is filled with unique objects, perfect color palettes, and sweet details, but my favorite thing about this space is that it is completely and totally “us”. Ten years from now when Tara and I are chasing babies around and only cleaning for company, I will look back on the year we spent in this place and giggle as I recount fond memories of our young, single, organized lives.
