Bedroom with wooden slat accent wall, abstract art, white bedding, and bedside tables with lamps and decor.

I’m not one for gimmicky or even wonderfully weird home decor products because, chances are, you won’t actually use them — and then these things just end up taking up space until you donate or discard them. But when I was browsing the PB Teen website and saw the Heritage Headboard Pillow, a little lightbulb went off in my head. It’s not often that I see bedroom items I haven’t seen before, but admittedly I’m a little out of the dorm decor game — and that appears to be where this trend originated.

Here’s the thing, though: Actual headboards are pretty expensive, especially the nicely padded upholstered ones, even when you’re hacking their design. For a dorm room, first apartment, spare bedroom, or even a space where you might want to invest in an upholstered bed frame one day but are currently waiting for “the one” (and maybe the funds?), headboard pillows are ingenious.

What Is a Headboard Pillow?

Headboard pillows are literally oversized cushions shaped like headboards that are cheaper and, in some cases, cozier than true headboards, thanks to their generous cushioned fill. If you have a simple metal bed frame, they’re a total upgrade from having no headboard at all, and they’ll only set you back anywhere from $30 to $150ish dollars (I’ve even seen a few for under $20!).

They come in a wide variety of colors, and some even have cute whimsical shapes, just like more expensive furniture headboards. And the best part? They’re incredibly cushy — more so than many real headboards — which makes them perfect for reading while sitting up in bed or binge-watching your favorite show. They’re also easy to toss to the side if you don’t want yours taking up space while you’re sleeping. You can even use one with a headboard for extra comfort. I can’t see much of a downside here, to be honest.

I went ahead and curated an assortment of headboard pillows for you. You’ll find so much variety below in color, shape, price point, and design that there should be something for every aesthetic and budget if you want to try this practical (and pretty) trend.

Heritage Headboard Pillow
$99

This PB Teen design is the headboard pillow that stopped me in my tracks while scrolling. Sized for a twin bed, it’d be perfect for a dorm or kids' room whether you go with the blue or white colorway. I love the classic arched shape and the piped detailing; it truly looks just like a headboard, but is even comfier to lounge or study against.

Wowmax Queen Size Seashell Shaped Headboard Cushion

Talk about a way to try a trend for less! This seashell-shaped headboard pillow will only set you back $79, and is a fun way to add some curves — and a pop of color — to a bed that’s begging for a refresh.

Gray Tufted Twin Headboard Cushion
$90

Another twin-size style, this jacquard textured headboard cushion comes in both a gray and cream colorway and features a traditional tufted look. It’s super-soft and thick and looks cute when accented with smaller throw pillows, too.

The Big One® Bubble Headboard Pillow
$40$32

The cool thing about this headboard cushion is that it features a handle for easy moving, just in case you want to bring it anywhere else. It’s also under $35 and made of faux fur, so you know it’s going to be cozy to curl up in.

$32 at Kohl's
Inventive Sleep® Backrest Wedge Pillow
$149

If you’re looking for a very substantial headboard cushion, then the wedge shape is for you; it’s not only ergonomic, but it also perfectly fills that gap between the wall and bed that occurs when you don’t have a proper headboard. This one by Inventive Sleep comes in a slew of colors to complement your bedroom decor, and even has a handy pocket for your TV remote or phone.

$149 at Pottery Barn
Oversized Headboard Lumbar Throw Pillow
$60

Another arched design, this headboard cushion features a cotton cover that can be removed and washed, which makes it a great choice for anyone who suffers from allergies or asthma. It comes in gray and white, and is sized perfectly for twin beds.

$60 at Target
Concierge Collection Headboard Pillow
$100

This wedge design features two removable neck bolsters, which is something I haven’t seen offered in other headboard pillow models. You can also get this one in a king size, which seems to be more difficult to find in the market as well.

$100 at HSN
CofeeMO Headboard Pillow
$36$33

For your cottagecore-loving pal (or self), you can’t argue with the cuteness — and coziness — of Walmart’s tufted and ruffle-trimmed design. It comes in three colors, and they’re all on sale for less than $30!
