Eight of Herman Miller’s Original ‘70s Art Prints Are Now Available As Groovy Posters
Mid-century modern design is having a major revival right now, and it’s impossible to properly discuss the design movement without mentioning the artist Alexander Girard. Over the course of his 20 years at iconic design brand Herman Miller’s textile division, he created over bold, experimental 300 creations that the era is renowned for.
Now, you have the chance to own some of Girard’s archival prints yourself. Herman Miller is reintroducing eight of the artist’s iconic designs in a new poster drop. First produced as part of the company’s Environmental Enrichment Panels in 1972, the genre-defying artworks were originally intended for use in the workplace as a means of adding levity to offices, and encouraging creativity and productivity by energizing workers with an extroverted color palette and geometric patterns.
“Pattern has always been the entry point into Alexander Girard’s irresistibly optimistic universe,” Ben Watson, President of Herman Miller, said in a press release. “His original intention was to use these prints to infuse color and energy into the workplace. In today’s world, work happens everywhere, and one’s home environment can be equally as creative and inspiring. These timeless designs are just as powerful as they were when introduced in 1972.”
If you’ve been looking to add a bit of ‘70s maximalism to your own home, you can pick up one of the posters from this series, which include well-known Girard designs like Bouquet, Palace, Double Heart, and Eyes. The posters will feature high-resolution digital prints of his original works on 100 percent cotton paper, available in American maple frames with a natural, white, or black finish.
Framed posters will be available for purchase at Herman Miller and Design Within Reach retail locations and online, with unframed versions available as cash-and-carry items at select stores. Prices for framed posters start at $525, while prices for unframed posters begin at $195.
