Raise your hand if you have a dog that sheds — yup, me too. I adopted Leo from a shelter earlier this year. He’s a medium-sized mixed breed, I suspect some combination of beagle and yellow lab. When I got him, Leo had heaps of fur piled on his back that basically came off in my hand, so I knew I was going to have to put in some work to keep him (and my apartment) clean and comfortable. In my pet owner experience over the years, I’ve used everything from deshedding shampoos to dog brushes, but shedding never goes away, of course. I stumbled across the Hertzko Self-Cleaning Deshedding Comb by happy coincidence and thought it was worth a shot. I had no idea it would work as well as it did for an at-home doggy makeover!

When the Hertzko Self-Cleaning Deshedding Comb arrived, I’d been using another dog brush that was supposed to help with shedding. While it did get rid of fur, the brush itself was very hard to clean. If the Hertzko comb did as it claimed, it was going to be a huge game changer for grooming my dog at home. Well, the first time I used it on Leo, so much fur came off of him! I knew he’d been shedding a lot due to weather changes and that the hair was piling up on his back, but I had no idea how much hair was there. Every time I ran the comb over his coat, it would fill with fur again. That’s when I appreciated the genius of the comb’s self-cleaning function. I could comb, empty, comb, empty over and over again without prolonging the grooming process. (Trust me, he didn’t want to sit still.) I got to see the full results of the deshedding comb after Leo dried off from his bath looking totally refreshed. All the piles of fur were gone, leaving him with a handsomely smooth and shiny coat. Not to mention, my shower drain wasn’t stopped up with fur.

How does it work? The Hertzko Self-Cleaning Deshedding Comb has a soft-grip handle and a 4” stainless steel curved blade that follows the natural slope of a dog’s body to make the deshedding process more comfortable for pooches. The head of the device features a push button for detaching the comb from the handle and a sliding button for self-cleaning. Detaching the comb is helpful for when I need to rinse or wash it separately from the base, while the slider pushes the hair out of the comb’s teeth with near-perfect results. Sometimes I have to give the comb a light shake for the fur to fall completely off, but it’s still super effective.

The Hertzko Self-Cleaning Deshedding Comb worked wonders for us! (I got mine on Amazon, but it’s also available on Chewy.) I’ve been using it for about a month, and it’s my favorite dog grooming tool right now. Since getting my dog’s initial combing session out of the way, I’ve only had to use it for maintenance. As long as I groom Leo regularly, it keeps his shedding down to a minimum and my carpet and furniture (mostly) hair free. We might not be able to stop the shedding, but having a gadget that makes it easy to manage is definitely a WIN in my book!
