Before and After: Justin Hartley Took a Bare Backyard and Turned It Into a Glam Poolside Retreat

With the right design elements, an outdoor living space—if you’re lucky enough to have one—can become a true extension of your home. In the latest episode of HGTV’s “Celebrity IOU,” actor Justin Hartley made this possible for his best friend Mat’s backyard, thanks to a little bit of renovation magic (aka the Property Brothers).

Mat and his family moved into a new home in Los Angeles, but since they poured all their money into fixing up the interior, the exterior had to be put on the back burner. The backyard was left in a dated state with hilly terrain, a non-working pool, and safety issues everywhere, with its potential of being the ultimate outdoor hangout untapped. So, with the help of Jonathan and Drew Scott, Hartley got to work to create a luxurious poolside retreat in three weeks time.

The pool was by far the biggest project that needed to be tackled, so the trio got to work stripping, retiling, and leveling the pool area to make it as safe and enjoyable as can be. The team decided to use blue tiles of all shades that projected a modern-vintage mashup, plus a few colorful floaties and their job was done. Additionally, the Property Brothers and Hartley removed all of the hardscaping and leveled the entire surface with new cement and grass.

Next to the house was an empty space that Jonathan and Drew planned to make the entertaining area. They installed a fully functioning cooking station, complete with a state of the art grill, pizza oven, and side bar—something that Mat always wanted. To stay comfortable while dining in the L.A. heat, the Property Brothers installed an electric pergola that could let sun in or shut it out, depending on the weather and mood.

In the far corner of the yard was another bare grassy area that Hartley wanted to transform into an intimate spot for Mat and his wife. They installed a modern fireplace and brought in wooden furniture, plus some lanterns and landscaping that made it feel like its own private oasis. To add some playfulness, the Property Brothers set up some putting green for the family to enjoy together (and have the occasional competition).
