Before and After: On HGTV’s “Celebrity IOU”, Snoop Dogg Transforms an Old Garage into a Multifunctional Office
Snoop Dogg had one main request in the latest episode of HGTV’s “Celebrity IOU”: he wanted his longtime friend, Commish, to have a “multifaceted” space in his remodeled garage. Commish, the head of the Snoop Youth Football League, does most of his work from home, so Snoop’s aspiration for the California garage renovation was “an office space where he can do the meetings for the football league and the community work that he does.” In addition to serving as a professional setting, he also wanted Commish to be able to relax and entertain friends.
Jonathan and Drew Scott distilled the space into an “office-meets-man-cave,” according to Drew, and quickly got to work remodeling the garage on a 30-day deadline, with lots of help from Snoop. The interior of the garage started as a worn-down, bare-bones room with dark wood and black walls. The garage was built on a gray concrete slab and featured an additional small, dark room in one corner.
Jonathan, Drew, and Snoop began the transformation by gutting the corner room from the space. They added multiple sliding glass doors and an oversized awning window to help bring some light into the dark space. They also reframed the structure of the garage to help make it a safer, more hospitable space. Instead of adding hardwood floors like they initially planned, the trio opted to do a seamless stone finish on the already existing concrete and use that instead, since it could provide durability for the amount of foot traffic passing through.
The brothers decided to install a kitchen area in the corner of the room, adding a bar area, under-the-counter mini fridges, a cooking area, and lots of counter space (which extended through the awning and into an outdoor counter). They created multifunctional hosting spaces in two corner areas of the room, one with a sectional and 60-inch flat-screen TV and the other with a small table and chairs.
The main color scheme of the renovation was black and silver, in honor of Commish’s favorite football team, the Las Vegas Raiders. The walls were painted either black or white, and most of the furniture was a matching sleek black (with the exception of a cool gray sectional). For a pop of color, they added green plants and framed football jerseys to the room. They also incorporated a wall of framed letters from people whose lives Commish had changed.
The exterior of the garage was in slightly better shape than the interior at the start of the project, but the gray paint and red pull-down door were still outdated enough that the Scott brothers decided to renovate. They got rid of the red door and added black paneling (a thermally-modified spruce that Snoop picked out) to the entire exterior for a torched, modern look. They added a privacy wall and turf, which made the yard look like an “oasis.” They also created a porcelain-tile patio space for entertaining, which included a grill and sitting area.
“Celebrity IOU” airs Mondays at 9/8 central on HGTV and Discovery+.
