The foyer can be so much more than a hallway you pass through on your way into a home. It has the potential be a designer’s dream, and a special space that welcomes you back after a long day with style and purpose. That’s the goal, at least for designer Tiffany Brooks, who hosts a new HGTV show that premiered April 26 called “$50K Three Ways.”

The ask is simple yet full of hard decisions: how should families spend their $50K renovation budget? Brooks presents three plans, then they make a choice. When it comes to the premiere episode, the results included a majorly updated foyer filled with a tips on how level up your own space.

During a renovation, sometimes the foyer can be an afterthought, meaning there’s isn’t a ton of money left in the budget for it. So, Brooks recommends a budget-friendly solution that is great for when something needs to be dramatically different for not a lot of money: wallpaper.

The family she was working with had a farmhouse vibe, so she chose wallpaper that matched their style. After some deliberating at the wallpaper store — where Brooks eliminated a beige option that she said didn’t have much “pop” — they decided on a blue plaid. She landed on this pattern because it leaned into “farmhouse” but wasn’t overly traditional. So if you too are looking to incorporate a farmhouse look into your space, opt for more geometric patterns with a simple repeat. 

Another quick fix that made a big difference is replacing older spindles on the staircase. Railings are used everyday, yet easily get overlooked when thinking about design updates in the foyer, but Brooks proved that refreshing them instantly make a huge impact. When replacing the spindles, instead of going for the same wooden look, Brooks used a modern, dark metal.

The metal rails, along with the new wallpaper, took the foyer from old fashioned farmhouse to fresh and vibrant. For more tips from Brooks, check out her new show “$50K Three Ways” on HGTV.
