Before & After: HGTV’s 2019 Urban Oasis Went from Dated to Dream Home
Tucked away in the Hiawatha neighborhood, just southeast of bustling downtown Minneapolis, the HGTV Urban Oasis 2019 is a nature lover’s dream. But it wasn’t always so gorgeous.
One of the cities oldest parks, Minnehaha Falls is mere steps away, creating a perfect balance between outdoor and city living. Borrowing inspiration from the city’s Nordic and Viking heritage, interior designer, Bryan Patrick Flynn opted for a Scandanavian Farmhouse theme.
“It made sense to honor the Nordic culture of the area into the house with the architecture and interior design. The house began as a four square and was a good candidate to transform into many different types of architectural styles,” says Flynn.
The kitchen centers on a sleek black 10 foot island, making it ideal for gathering with family and friends to chat and prepare meals together. The island’s open shelving provides ample storage for all your cookbooks, trinkets and kitchen essentials. Adding to its minimalist charm, all appliances are built into handmade cabinets for seamless style and functionality.
The living room’s stunning floor to ceiling windows flood the space with gorgeous natural light. A 10-person sectional hugs the perimeter of the room and is ideal for entertaining guests or spending time with family. A lovely mix of patterns and textures in bright white, black and gray are warm and inviting, while custom Nordic art hangs on the far wall to bring the space together.
The stars of the dining room are a reclaimed wood dining table and striking mid-century modern chandelier that adds interest and dimension to the space. The viking helmet artwork keeps in tune with the home’s overall theme with its black frame and golden accents. Steps away is a spacious entryway with comfy seating and a place to hang all your coats and accessories.
The upper level maximizes the potential of this 1,800 square foot home with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The guest bedroom features dark walls accented by oversized framed maps of Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhangen. A chunky woven throw covers the opposite wall and eclectic lighting injects a bit of excitement. Brilliant white walls serve as a backdrop for pops of airy pink, sky blue and gray in the home office. Fluffy faux fur chairs, geometric artwork and a touch of green gives this space a touch of whimsy. The master suite’s light blue hue is perfectly paired with white accessories and mid-century modern accents. A patterned rug and low-slung bed grounds the space, making it ideal for retreating after a long day.
The outdoor living spaces are the icing on the cake of this cozy and modern abode. Lush greenery surrounds the front porch and continues up to the landing, which displays sleek rocking chairs, a patterned rug and lovely flowers. The backyard space is amazing for entertaining guests with ample seating, bistro lights and plenty of room to take in Minnesota’s naturally beautiful landscape.
