Hilton Carter lives in a historic building in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore with his wife, Fiona, pup, Charlie, cats, Isabella and Zoe, and… over 200 houseplants. Known around Apartment Therapy as the Plant Doctor, Hilton is a plant stylist, interior designer, artist, and filmmaker. He’s been collecting plants since 2011, and spends hours every weekend watering and methodically caring for them. Hilton sees plants as an integral part of his home, making the space feel warm and inviting while cleaning the air and “bringing the outside in.”

Hilton and Fiona’s style—a mashup of bohemian, industrial, and urban jungle—matches their loft apartment, with its soaring ceilings and huge, northwest-facing windows. The building, built as a cotton mill in the 1870s, maintained elements like stone columns and original wood flooring when it was converted into apartments. Mid-century style pieces from West Elm are combined with an assortment of vintage and thrifted finds that each tell a story. Thoughtful gallery walls include art from Hilton’s work, as well as a great deal of art made by friends. Hilton has customized the space with innovative projects like his DIY painted wall in the dining area, a custom plant canopy above the bed in the bedroom, and a “living wall” of propagated plants in the hallway.

Hilton also has a studio space down the road, Jungle by the Falls, which he has curated and styled with even more plants. He created it so that “other artists, filmmakers, photographers and even event planners, could rent out a space that blurred the lines of interior/exterior,” as his own home does.

Now, along with titles like Plant Doctor, stylist, designer, and artist, Hilton can also add author to the list: His new book, “Wild at Home: How to Style and Care for Beautiful Plants,” is out April 9, 2019.
