Before I transitioned from an office job to working from home full-time almost three years ago, I had grand plans for my home office. It would be perfectly styled and flawlessly organized. Spoiler: it is neither of those things. I like my office (and am very thankful to have the privilege of having a separate working space), but I’ve just never invested the time or money to make it serve me as well as it could. Is this you, too?

If it is, here’s something I discovered from talking to organization experts: They all agree that there’s really only one home office storage solution that everyone needs: it’s one that addresses your paper clutter. Everyone has it, and if you don’t have a system for keeping it under control, it’s going to get out of control.

Here are five different solutions to help you manage paper clutter

5 Storage Solutions for Managing Paper Clutter

The Container Store

For Anastasia Berzukova, certified KonMari consultant and founder of Minori, the easiest way to manage your paper clutter is with this mini filing cabinet from Poppin (though she also suggests digitizing as many physical documents as possible to eliminate even more clutter).

“Space is at a premium in a NYC apartment and this cabinet fits perfectly under my desk allowing me to properly organize what before just looked cluttered,” one customer wrote in a review on the Pippin website. “It is not cheap but is beautifully made, and very solid yet stylish. The only assembly needed is attaching the casters — which again are well designed and sturdy.”

Ryan Eisland and Brandie Larsen, the sister-duo behind Home Sort, prefer these acrylic containers from mDesign for sorting and processing mail and other documents.

As one customer wrote in a 5-star review, “I love this clear plastic file folder bin so much that I've bought it multiple times. I use it to hold and organize magazines, study guides, travel info and maps, etc. I also use it to hold small field notebooks and other small books that I store on bookshelves.”

For a more traditional file organizing solution, you can’t go wrong with a file organizing rack. The metal mesh of this particular file organizer allows you to disguise the files while not obstructing your view of them altogether. And the reviews are excellent. “I love this thing and I use it daily at my job. I keep it on my bookshelf to store files in. It's like a little portable file cabinet I've had for over a year and it's in great shape still,” one reviewer writes. “And I have to say it's taken a beating.”

If the idea of organizing your files appeals to you, but you don't care for the aesthetics of a traditional file organizer or cabinet, you’re probably not alone. Luckily, there are quite a few more attractive options available these days that will hide your papers and documents — like this seagrass file organizer from Target, for example. It’s versatile (with wheels and everything), cute, and fits right into different types of design aesthetics — farmhouse, rustic, eclectic, and more.

CB2

This filing cabinet looks pretty standard as filing cabinets go, but its stellar reviews prove that it’s something special. With 169 reviews and 4.8 stars, this two-drawer filing cabinet on wheels is described as “mechanic shop chic,” but it has a pretty modern feel overall. As another reviewer wrote, “I purchased this cabinet nearly 3 years ago and it continues to hold more than it should! It always opens smoothly and is an understated, beautiful addition to the aesthetic in my office.”
