Slow and steady wins the race, even in cleaning. In the proverbial tale of the tortoise and the hare, the hare is all of those people who drive themselves crazy with back-breaking quick-sprint cleans before their mother-in-laws drop in for the weekend. We... we are the tortoises.

By signing up for Apartment Therapy Weekend Projects, you're already one step ahead in the race. You're part of a community of people who are dedicated to getting their happy, healthy homes in order in the most simple and serene way: one weekend at a time.

The first task of the year is below (scroll down if you want to skip right to it!) but for the benefit of the newbies, here's a little background on Weekend Projects:

How Weekend Projects Works

If you're new to the program, welcome! Starting today, you'll get an email each weekend with a new project to tackle around the house — it might be a quick cleaning chore, a small home maintenance project or maybe a workhorse organizing effort.

But here's the thing: There is absolutely no pressure to do it! You pick and choose what works best for you and your home, and what you have the energy or time to tackle. It's really just a little bit of structure to help you make your home better, one small effort at a time.

Support Others, and Get Support In Return

Every post will include all the info you need to get the project done by the end of the weekend. But Weekend Projects work best when everyone participates and lets the rest of us know how things are going. While you work, ask questions of others, give help, or just check in and chat in the comment threads. Thoughts or suggestions, requests and tips are welcome at any time. We're all here to motivate ourselves to make our spaces better — little by little, week by week — at a natural, low-pressure, and manageable pace.

So let's jump in with the first project, shall we?

This Weekend's Assignment:

Fix one broken thing.

You know how when you flip a coin to decide between, say, pizza or tacos, and there's a moment when the coin is still in the air that you become precisely aware that no matter what the coin shows, pizza was the choice you wanted in your heart all along? When I said "fix a broken thing," I hope you had the same instinct. There's something at home that's been nagging you, and this weekend is the weekend that you put boss pants on and Handle It™️.

Maybe it's a loose cabinet knob, or a piece of paint that's chipped off the wall, or maybe it's a shower head that's not spraying quite as well as it should. Your only job this weekend is to grab a screwdriver or a paint brush or a plastic baggie filled with vinegar and get to work.

Happy weekend everyone! Tell us in the comments what you're getting busy fixing. And please take a second to let me know what tasks you're hoping Weekend Projects can help you with this year — I'm all ears!

You can catch up with weekend projects right here. Share your progress with us and others by posting updates and photos on Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #atweekendproject.

Remember: This is about improvement, not perfection. Each week you can either choose to work on the assignment we've sent you, or tackle another project you've been meaning to get to. It's also completely okay to skip a weekend if you're busy or not feeling the assignment.
