Shilpa and Aditya both grew up in India and moved to North America in their early twenties. Their taste is a mix of both worlds and their home’s style could be described as eclectic and contemporary… with a touch of Indian.

Creativity and an appreciation for craftsmanship run deep for this couple. These digital marketing and finance professionals are also the proud founders of Madras Kaapi, a South Indian Madras Coffee sourced from the hills of India and married with French Canadian roasting craftsmanship.

While Shilpa and Aditya’s condo is fairly basic—without many architectural details that stand out—it’s a perfect canvas for a couple who travels a lot. Every year it’s a new destination for them, and each trip they desperately try to pack and fit as many small souvenirs and decor objects as they can in their suitcases on the way back. This dedication to collecting personal items (with lovely travel memories attached) has added a wonderful layer of personality to the home. Their house is a good example of how to improve a cookie-cutter condo with the use of vivid colored items, luxurious Indian cushions, and patterned fabrics… while keeping it simple and airy.

Our Style: Eclectic and contemporary with a touch of Indian. We grew up in India and moved to North America in our early twenties, so our taste is a mix of two worlds!

Inspiration: Shilpa: I’m inspired by everything colorful and artsy! I take some inspiration from websites such as Apartment Therapy (cliché, but true!), Mirador Life, Amber Interiors, Jungalow, West Elm, and Good Earth India.

Favorite Element: All the natural light we get through our French windows. Helps brighten the long Montreal winters.

Biggest Challenge: Not having enough space in the dining area. Both my husband and I love having friends over but it’s always challenging to have a dinner on the table without cramming for space. We host parties instead! Haha.

What Friends Say: That the apartment is cosy and charming! They always compliment my collection of cushions and the upside-down planters.

Biggest Embarrassment: The microwave and the closets in the bedrooms.

Biggest Indulgence: Well, the house itself. Also, the light fixture in our kitchen, the plants and all my cute cushions that I’ve collected over the years. I strongly believe that there is no such thing as too many cushions or too many plants!

Best Advice: Explore and be patient when you are trying to fill empty spaces. Everything you bring into your home must have a story.

Dream Sources: Homes in Miraflores, Peru for the gorgeous patios, Santorini for the blue and white colors, and a town called Tanjore in South India for all the antiques and vintage Indian-touched homes!
