When Rian was on the hunt for an apartment to purchase two years ago, she specifically wanted a new-build for “the comfort it provides.” But she says the choices were slim and she found herself with only a few options to choose from. “It took me a couple of months to find this, with my real estate agent, and what caught my eye was the southern-facing rooms with all the natural light, the combined living room/kitchen ,and the two bedrooms. Plus, there’s an outside space that overlooks a large part of Amsterdam — I’m a sucker for views!”

The other biggest positive about this 785-square-foot, two-bedroom unit was that it was just one plain “white shell” — and totally ready for Rian to put her own “stamp” on it. “All the walls were white, whether painted or tiled,” Rian describes of the pre-move-in vibes. “The kitchen was only a few cabinets with a removable stove and fridge, and there was simple, dark brown laminate flooring.”
It was important to Rian that this home be a place she could enjoy and that would feel like her — and not like what was popular or trendy right now. “I thought to myself: What’s my favorite color? And the answer is pink! My aim was to create an all-pink apartment that’s also modern — a place that I would enjoy more than my 6-year-old niece (who’s favorite color is also pink) would.”
And when Rian says all pink, she means it. Every room except the bathroom is painted a shade of pink on the walls and the ceilings. “To achieve that modern and non-whimsical look, I combined the pink with green, gold, and black accents,” she describes. “The idea I had in my mind was to make a 1920s boutique pink hotel kind of vibe, and while it might not be perfect, I think I got quite close!”
Rian, who grew up on an island in the north of the Netherlands (named Texel) and moved to Amsterdam to study English at the University of Amsterdam, is quite the world traveler (I did the Trans Mongolia Express from Moscow to Beijing, road tripped through Australia and Morocco, recently visited Armenia) and soon will be emigrating to London for a new job. Will her next apartment be all-pink, too? Stay tuned to her Instagram account to find out!
