I had heard a lot of things about Panama, but when I’ve arrived I immediately knew this is a country full of contrasts. There are modern, cosmopolitan areas with views of the skyline and the ocean. Or you can get lost in the old neighborhood of Casco Viejo, where you can feel the history in the charming and colorful architecture. There a few things you can’t miss in Casco Viejo. One of them is this dreamy hotel with a modern twist.
This boutique hotel is in the middle of the city, making it a great place to enjoy the old historic quarter or as a central jumping off point for exploring the rest of Panama City. In Casco, all the old buildings are getting restored with respect to the historic, original architecture.
The American Trade Hotel is the perfect mix of old and new. The building has been thoroughly outfitted with contemporary conveniences, but thanks to careful designing, it hasn’t lost its historic soul. It’s a space that makes you feel cozy, almost like home.
It was very important that the texture and material choices in the rooms create different feelings and emotions as well as respect the building’s history. The beautiful tiles that add pattern to the floor, for instance, were made with an original pattern, but this time in an intense, bold blue.
There are big windows where that let in lots of natural light, and allow for beautiful city views. The art found in all the different rooms are produced mainly by local artists, like the big and abstract mural created by Ana Elena Garuz.
The hotel’s philosophy is to maintain the historic origin of the building, but also renew the space with innovative design and an ecological awareness; that’s why most of the furniture comes from reused wood and is produced by local artisans.
In the dining room you can enjoy local and seasonal ingredients in a creative, colorful setting. There’s also coffee available from local producers or pastries from the bakery. The hotel tried to create a charming place for not only guests staying at the hotel, but for anyone visiting. One can enjoy cultural activities, like jazz nights with Grammy-winning, internationally known jazz pianist and composer Danilo Perez.
Thanks, American Trade!
