Name: Cristina and Lucia
Location: Brooklyn, NYC

My name is Cristina, and I am 26 year old Spanish girl living in a beautiful loft in Brooklyn, New York. I am a follower of Apartment Therapy (we follow soooo many of your advice and tips!!). I share this huge loft with my sister Lucia, an amazing interior designer.

Our loft is one of the apartments of the Mckibbin Lofts in Bushwick, very famous for their stories and big roof parties. It used to be a fabric factory and now is home to more than 400 young and creative people in their late 20s early 30s. We have been living here since February 2012, and ending up in this place was not just another NYC hunting apartment story.

We were subletting a room some blocks away from The Mckibbin Lofts, and my sister’s dream was to live in one of those “Art dorms,” but we couldn’t afford it even back then, when the neighborhood wasn’t chic yet, as we were both doing unpaid internships while babysitting.

After saving some money, finding other roommates for the lease and lots of negotiations with our landlords, we finally got to sign the lease to our “dream home,” which was empty of furniture and really, really big.

Over the years and with a lot of effort and love we managed to create a very cozy loft in one of the trendiest neighborhoods of New York. We love DIY projects and our furniture was either bought for very cheap and customized or found on the streets and restored by ourselves.

About a year ago, one of our roommates moved out and instead of trying to find a replacement, we decided to use Airbnb. Since then, we’ve met very interesting people from all around the world, and some of them have become real friends.

It felt like travelling without leaving the comfort of home, which is perfect because travelling is our biggest passion. We love having people over and chilling at home, that’s why we put a hammock and a swing in the living room.

Also, as the space caught the eye of many people, we have hosted lots of photo shoots from models, to weddings, music videos and beauty and fashion brands like Elisabeth Arden or Ann Taylor. We have also been featured in some magazines such as Vogue, or Refinery29.

Thanks, Cristina! Follow the loft on Instagram. You can check out some of Lucia’s interior design work in this spa. (Home description and photos edited for clarity.)
