The trick to studios is how to make the most of the space you're given. For Alex, a studio apartment previously owned by an architect obsessed with built-ins has proved both a boon and a challenge. An avid antiques collector and reseller (and lover of all things related to Scandinavian design), Alex balances his desire for a warm and well-curated space with the necessities of living in a small apartment — like where to hide your AC unit and bed.

The first things you notice when you walk into Alex's home are the cozy colors and the light. South-facing windows pour sunlight into the space illuminating the warm wood, colorful objects and art that Alex collects with great delight and a refined eye.

Although Alex was enamored of the apartment and its built-ins at first, some of them began to feel a bit too constraining. So he did some renovating of his own: taking down a second corner desk area that seemed too bulky improved the flow of the space and provided more options for him to create different "room" areas within the studio.

An additional renovation of the bathroom refreshed the overall look. The room also houses one of my favorite elements of the apartment: the mid-century modern dresser-turned-bathroom vanity. Although it was a challenging item to source and secure in the space, it brings such character to the bathroom and enhances the overall feel.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Mid-Century Scandinavian without being a time warp — it's a balance.

Inspiration: I take a little of everything.

Favorite Element: The light

Biggest Challenge: The Murphy bed, which is a lifesaver, prevents the furniture layout from changing too much. I'm someone who seems to constantly want to flip everything around, so the challenge has been finding pieces that continue to improve how the space is utilized in the placement that makes the most sense.

What Friends Say: Most think I'm crazy, or an eBay addict

Biggest Embarrassment: I tend to jump the gun when making decisions — buying before I've sold, or selling before I've bought. It's not uncommon that I've ended up spending a week or two with far too many chairs, or none at all.

Proudest DIY: In the past year alone, I've painted my kitchen four times — finding a color I can stick with and not losing my sanity in the process was a pretty big one.

Biggest Indulgence: Isn't everything? Though I got a great deal, it's likely my Gio Ponti bar set – I knew when I bought it that it was too precious to ever use.

Best Advice: Too much storage is a thing.

Dream Sources: Honestly, the hunt, and being resourceful for me is more exciting than paying a premium for immediacy.
