I find it incredibly inspiring when people shirk off their worldly possessions, say no to the 9 to 5, and trade a rent check for a home on wheels. And while the breathtaking natural landscapes you can see behind these vans, Airstreams and trailers on Instagram are stunning, it’s fairly unusual when the interior of a mobile home is elevated beyond just functional. Rarer still when your home is only a few square feet and lacks a foundation.
Liz and Tim Kamarul were living in Portland when she spotted a 1982 Winnebago for sale. She’s a professional home stager with a healthy Instagram following and he’s a graphic designer with serious DIY skills. Together, they renovated the RV to create a truly unique home-on-wheels, spending the last five months traveling the US.
Though the reno took longer than Liz thought it would (like, every weekend for months on end), the result is well worth the work. From the sumptuously textured textiles to the energetic wallpaper patterns and more, Liz and Tim boldly went where few go with mobile home interior design. And yes, they did all the work themselves (YouTube videos helped!). Liz also documented the RV’s renovation; you can see before photos as well as how much all the materials cost on her blog. Alas, after a fantastic stint on the road, this gorgeous RV is parked for the time being: Liz and Tim have recently settled into an apartment (that doesn’t move), this time in the fine city of New Orleans (and, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to meet them!).
In an age when many people can snap a photo of a good looking home vignette, Liz and her interior design skills stand out because each design choice is filtered through her adventurous, playful personality. She’s a quick, instinctual designer, as well: They’ve only been in their New Orleans apartment for a few weeks, and it already looks fantastic (and yes — don’t worry, I will be bugging her for a full tour when it’s completely done). Liz is also known for her thrift shopping skills, something I’ve now had the pleasure of experiencing in person. On my first thrift outing with her this weekend, we both ended up taking home eight-foot tall bird paintings. This is a woman not afraid to take a chance on decor.

Favorite Element: The acrylic dining table
Biggest Challenge: Storage
What Friends Say: It’s so much bigger than in looks in the photos!
Biggest Embarrassment: The cushions of the driver and passenger seats; we didn’t have them reupholstered so if you lift up the sheep fur it reveals the old ripped fabric.
Proudest DIY: The carpet in the cab
Biggest Indulgence: Our mattress
Best Advice: Do as much of the work as you can yourself, YouTube everything
Dream Sources: Anthropologie, Rejuvenation
