When I walked into Matthew’s one-bedroom apartment, I was shocked that he’s only been living there for two months. He found a gem of a building in Avondale featuring wood floors, bright clean walls with contrasting dark molding, and lots of natural light. But I was more impressed with what he’s done with the apartment in such a short time. He’s filled it with a carefully chosen collection of plants, art and artifacts to create a sophisticated space that shows off his personality.
Matthew describes his style as a “mixture of mid-century, brass, and the color black.” The result is a clean and striking palette that somehow feels both modern and traditional. Elements like the DIY geometric wall in the dining room add delightful surprises, and an abundance of plants make the predominately black, white, and neutral decor more lively and inviting.
Walking around the apartment you can see the love and care that Matthew puts into every detail. He says “everything has its own particular place” and he only buys items that make him feel happy.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Mixture of mid-century, brass, and the color black.
Inspiration: I take inspiration from Scandinavian design, filled with items that make me feel happy, personal and friend’s travels, and lots and lots of plants!
Favorite Element: I love how much natural light pours in from the windows.
Biggest Challenge: I have virtually no storage in my bathroom and closets, so I am always looking for ideas to place items without looking too cluttered.
What Friends Say: My friends often ask for decorating tips. They have encouraged me to share photos of my apartment.
Biggest Embarrassment: When it comes to my apartment, everything has its own particular place. If you touch it, I will move it back.
Proudest DIY: I really enjoy my black “plus symbol” wall in the dining room.
Biggest Indulgence: A sheepskin hide that I bought from someone on Instagram.
Best Advice: I always ask myself if the item will bring me happiness before I purchase it (I rarely say no).
Dream Sources: I covet everything from Bloglovin’ Home (Instragram), Asrai Garden, Jayson Home, Gather Home, Schoolhouse Electric, apieceofcake82 (Instagram), lottagaton (Instagram), and CB2.
