Apartment Therapy first caught up with interior designer Candace Soriano (now Rein) and her husband Jason Rein in 2015, touring their Old World Home with Modern California Charm in Hancock Park. While a lot has happened in two years (a wedding, a move, and a new little one on the way, to name a few), Candace has managed to create a whole new charming home just a few miles away by using some of the same pieces and a few new refreshing updates, including a bedroom inspired by the city Jason proposed in — Paris, bien súr.

Candace and Jason’s new, sun-kissed home retains many of the same stylish elements found in their last home in Hancock Park. While many of their staple pieces remain the same — like a vintage-inspired West Elm bar cart, vintage club chair, vintage brass coffee table, and bistro dining set — the space, as a whole, has a new type of charm.

She swapped heavier pieces, like a gilded mirror above the sofa, for a sleek, single-line art print. And large-scale accent lamps with black shades for clear globe sconces. In this home, Candace has created an equally stylish vibe that feels more light and breezy and less moody. This expert update is great inspiration for anyone looking to refresh their own home without doing a complete overhaul.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: I struggle with choosing from so many favorite styles! Bottom line, I love a good, curated mix of vintage and modern accents.

Inspiration: Art, travel, fashion and other aspirational interior designers such as Jake Arnold, Cliff Fong, Vanessa Alexander and Amber Lewis.

Favorite Element: All the bright natural light we get through our front windows.

Biggest Challenge: 1.) To not get carried away and over design the space. I find so many amazing pieces that I which I had the space for. 2.) With a baby on the way, we’ve already started to accumulate all the not-so-chic baby necessities that will be scattered everywhere. We want to make it functional and comfortable for our family’s lifestyle but not lose our original sense of style. Well, we hope!

What Friends Say: That we didn’t waste any time to get fully settled in!

Biggest Embarrassment: Our kitchen backsplash. I can’t bear to look at it. Since we rent, it’s a work in progress to make so many cosmetic tweaks for our temporary stay.

Proudest DIY: I wouldn’t call it a DIY but the first thing I did when we moved in was change out the heavy, dark wooden blinds to white drapes and removing the dated light sconces and adding beautiful clear glass globes.

Biggest Indulgence: The blue Soumak rug in our living room. I eyed it for a year before finally committing to getting it.

Best Advice: Don’t be afraid to mix it up and make it lived in! It’s not a catalog, it’s your home.
