Brittany, Christian, and their much-adored German Shepard mix, Ted, live in a classic row house in Washington, DC, just east of the U.S. Capitol. They’ve built an elegant and sophisticated home, lovingly filled with details collected over time.
Brittany, an entrepreneur, experience designer and yoga instructor, is as calm, cool, and collected as her style. She has an eye for treasures, whether at a flea market or while cleaning out the basement of her great-grandmother’s farmhouse. Her and Christian’s appreciation for their past and connection to cherished times is visible throughout their home, with many mementos from their wedding and honeymoon.
All the rooms in the house are incredibly cohesive in their style, hues and skillful mixing of patterns and textures. Seamlessly combining old and new, Brittany has taken on a number of furniture painting projects to bring consistency to the color palette. This is even evident in the English basement studio apartment downstairs, which the couple rents out on Airbnb.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Relaxed and collected.
Inspiration: There are so many incredible sources for inspiration. Recently, I’ve been checking out nooks, which is a Scandinavian real estate site with incredibly designed apartments. I also pull from blogs, magazines, and our travels. Right now, I’m on a big Cape Dutch kick after spending time at Babylonstoren in South Africa this past May. I came home wanting to redo everything in whites and creamy woods.
Favorite Element: We’re fortunate to have an English basement studio apartment with its own entrance, which we rent out on Airbnb. We love being able to share our space so others can experience the neighborhood and explore what DC has to offer.
Biggest Challenge: Keeping our dark hardwood floors clean. Ted, our 50-pound German Shepherd mix, loves to leave his hair everywhere and drool on the floor.
What Friends Say: “What a great place to drink wine.”

Biggest Embarrassment: When we first moved in, I remember waking up in the middle of the night after having a dream about running out of toilet paper. It was quite an adjustment getting used to more space and 3.5 bathrooms after moving here from a studio apartment.
Proudest DIY: The red console in our living area. I found it in rough shape for $30 at Luckett’s Spring Market. I’m pretty sure Christian wanted it to stay on the delivery truck when they pulled up to drop it off. After an afternoon of sanding and painting, it became an awesome piece that anchors the space and provides additional storage!
Biggest Indulgence: Our dining table. After selling our refurbished Duncan Phyfe, I finally splurged and got the tulip table I had been eyeing. I’m slowing inching closer towards a real Saarinen…
Best Advice: Don’t feel the need to buy everything at once. Collect what speaks to you and find ways to move it around in your space over time.
