The outskirts of western Ahmedabad are dotted with farmhouses and weekend getaways. Driven by their love for nature, Vaishali and Rasesh made the decision to move away from the city into a home that brings together all their passions: the outdoors, travel and the quiet life.

The Shah residence is an expansive home built around a central idea: to feel connected with the outdoors. Nestled in a quiet village, amid birdcalls and rustling trees, the home, with plenty of skylights and large, floor-to-ceiling windows, is an oasis of tranquility.

Avid travelers, Vaishali and Rasesh have used a mix of traditional sculptures and antique curios to highlight memories, while still creating a minimal, uncluttered look. Cement, wood and muted white walls highlight the colorful accessories and artwork—serigraphs by Majit Bawa, Haku Shah, Harshil Patel and M F Husain—with a simple, earthy charm.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Contemporary, simple, fuss-free.

Inspiration: Travel. Every piece in the house reflects the memories of the places we’ve traveled to.

Favorite Element: The openness of the house, the fact that it feels like we’re in the middle of our own private green cocoon. That and the tons of natural light.

Biggest Challenge: Nothing actually.

What Friends Say: Our friends love our home, and are always happy to stay over on weekends, especially during cricket season!

Biggest Embarrassment: Nothing.

Proudest DIY: The entire house. We actually conceived the floor plan pretty much on our own; we had very clear ideas about how we wanted the house to look and feel. Our architect helped us bring this to life, practically.

Biggest Indulgence: The swimming pool, because of the expense and maintenance involved, and our His and Hers bathrooms!

Best Advice: Keep things simple. Our rooms are small, and we’ve tried to keep them cozy without making them feel cluttered. You don’t have to display everything you have!

Dream Sources: The world…there are so many more places left to travel to!
