A Designer's Modern Blend in Denver

Name: Elyza Brillantes and her husband Austin
Location: Denver, Colorado
Size: 2,100 square feet
Years Lived In: 1.5 years, owned

My husband and I moved to Denver from Jersey City, New Jersey for a change of pace and after getting married the year prior, we were ready to buy our first home. Having lived in small apartments together previously, we knew we wanted a house that had space to entertain and enough yard space for a garden.

We saw several houses before finding this one, and as soon as we stepped inside, we knew it was perfect for us. Both of us come from large families that love to entertain, so the open layout of the first floor really appealed to us. We love cooking, having friends over for dinner and board games, and throwing the occasional dance party, so having this larger space to have friends over was definitely one of our top priorities in choosing a home.

This home has been a such fun project for us—we knew we were ready to start transitioning out of our "first apartment" furniture into more intentional pieces that we loved and wanted to invest in. I started working at Havenly shortly after moving into this house and being immersed in interior design day-to-day for clients definitely helped me define my own personal style.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: An eclectic, modern blend, with rustic accents

Inspiration: I come from a textile design background, so I get most of my inspiration from color, pattern, and textures. I'm immediately attracted to eclectic mixes between patterns and color!

Favorite Element: Our art collection. We have artwork from several close friends, silk-screened concert posters, as well as local artists and artists I've found on Instagram. Art gives a home so much personality and context, and we love finding new pieces to incorporate.

Biggest Challenge: We moved from an 1100-square-foot, one-bedroom apartment to a 2100-square-foot, three-bedroom house. We had some furniture moving in but ultimately had to buy all new items to help fill all the rooms! Figuring out a good way to create a cozy, yet comfortable seating area in the front end of the main room (where the zebra rug is) was a bit of a challenge—it had to mesh well with the dining area, bar cabinet, as well as be enough of a statement making vignette, since it sits right next to the front door.

Proudest DIY: I crafted our coffee table from crates from Michaels! It's on casters, since I usually need to move the table out of the way to work out (and for the occasional dance party). I loved how this came out and it also acts as a great storage piece for our board games.

Biggest Indulgence: Our two Rowe Keller Chairs! These were custom from a local shop here in Denver, and were definitely one of our most indulgent purchases. They're incredibly comfortable though, and are the perfect space to have a drink and decompress at the end of a day!

Best Advice: Buy what you love and trust it will come together. Your instinct is sharper than you know and if you collect items that you are instinctively drawn to, your own personal style will come through!
