Kelly and Colton’s small cottage home just west of downtown Austin is a case study for renovations done right. Their reno began as a series of DIY projects to remove the previous owner’s design decisions, but Kelly and Colton soon found themselves in the midst of a whole house renovation — for the first time.

While she admits they had no idea what they were doing, Kelly’s eye for design and Colton’s handiness transformed their home into the light and open space it is today. Her advice? Don’t be afraid!

As rookies they dove right in and tackled many of the projects themselves. They spent hours sourcing, finding inspiration, and researching how-to’s online. Like them, you might make mistakes and learn from them, but remember to have fun with the process. The end result may just be like this one: an example of how experience can be secondary to determination. See the bathroom before here.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: A blend of Scandinavian and Industrial Modern. We love natural light, the clean and crispness of white, and the calmness of clean lines.

Inspiration: Hours and hours and hours and hours of Houz-ing, Pinterest-ing, and Google-ing.

Favorite Element: The high, vaulted ceiling in our sunroom complemented by the large bay windows, which bring the outdoors inside. Spending time in this space is especially enjoyable during the hot Texas summer months – we feel like we are outside sitting among the trees.

Biggest Challenge: We love big, open spaces with high ceilings and a lot of light – neither of which existed in our home…

What Friends Say: “You transformed this home” and “Can you help me renovate my home?”

Biggest Embarrassment: Our front yard was left unfinished for almost three months thanks to a landscaper contract gone bad.

Proudest DIY: Don’t think we can pick just one! I would say the culmination of all the DIY projects resulting in the entire remodel and how we have made a small home feel open and light.

Biggest Indulgence: We invested in beautiful and high quality plumbing hardware in the kitchen and master bath, such as our Victoria + Albert deep Victorian double-ended roll-top claw foot tub, Rohl fixtures and Kohler farmhouse sink.

Best Advice: We had no idea what we were doing but it turned out better than we ever expected. My advice is don’t be afraid – dive right in, make mistakes, learn and have fun!
