Name: Stefano Giacomello
Location: Outremont, Montreal
Size: 600 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, renting
Stefano is a 3D artist and designer with a great eye for home decor and spatial planning. And his style is influenced considerably by the ’80s and a love for graphic lines and vibrant colors. Although Stefano’s apartment is on the small side, every item has its own place.
Stefano’s apartment is located in Outremont, a residential area filled with local stores, cafés, restaurants, and probably the best parks in town. Stefano considers himself lucky to have found this place at an affordable rent. Especially with the home’s architectural features like the brick wall and unique floor design (something rare in Montreal). Apparently, everyone who visits is impressed by it!
The main furnishings are a few basic black IKEA pieces of furniture, and many small vibrant decor elements added in for contrast. The accents are all mainly primary colors, like red, blue and yellow (cementing the ’80s vibes). Also adding to the color palette is the group of several beautiful plants near the window; they are his favorite elements in the apartment.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Memphis Italian design influenced, ’80s
Inspiration: Memphis Milano, movies, books
Favorite Element: My plants, sofa, special pieces of furniture that I have collected.
Biggest Challenge: My apartment is pretty small so I have to be pretty efficient when it comes to configuring the space.
What Friends Say: “Every item has its own place in your apartment.”
Biggest Embarrassment: My bed frame. I tend to hide it under a stack of pillows.
Proudest DIY: Installing the shelf on a brick wall.
Biggest Indulgence: It’s a little geeky but I spent quite a bit of money on Philips HUE system, a personal wireless lighting system that lets you easily control your light from your device.
Best Advice: Take your time to find the furniture and items you like and enjoy the process of organizing your space.
Dream Sources: The Memphis Period. The Memphis Group, founded in Italy in the 1980s. “The Memphis group’s work often incorporated plastic laminate and was characterized by ephemeral design featuring colorful decoration and asymmetrical shapes.”
