A Mid-Century-Inspired Amsterdam Apartment

Name: Tolga and Tomi
Location: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Size: 700 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, owned

Tolga and Tomi's colorful apartment is a starter home dream-come-true. Located in a fun Amsterdam neighborhood that is filled with many restaurants and bars, it's just what the couple had dreamed of; a space that they could return to and relax from the hustle and bustle of city life.

At about 700 square feet (65 square meters), the apartment has a spacious, wide-open floor plan, but also has just the right amount of spaces throughout that feel cozy. When asked what their favorite element of the apartment is, they both agreed on the French Bulldog print, "Mike." Tolga and Tomi don't think that they have the lifestyle to own a dog just yet, so a fun and quirky print of one will suffice for the time being.

When decorating the home, they decided to take it slow, agreeing that finding the perfect piece of furniture is more important than filling up the apartment as fast as possible. Over the past three years, they have collected little tidbits from their travels and scoured the flea markets of Amsterdam for mid-century finds.

After living in their apartment for three years, Tolga and Tomi have dreams of remodeling the space to further suit their needs. Their love for the outdoors makes them dream of opening up the apartment facade to include a balcony. The strict building codes in Amsterdam make this a bit of a challenge, but with the couple's creativity, we think they just may be able to figure something out!

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Mid-century modern

Inspiration: Pinterest and Hutspot showroom

Favorite Element: "Mike", the print of a French bulldog we bought in Melbourne and carried all through our trip in Australia.

Biggest Challenge: Plants. We've even killed a cactus!

What Friends Say: "Every time we visit there's something new or changed!"

Biggest Embarrassment: Narnia (Our walk-in closet that has become the storage for whatever has no space in the rest of the house.)

Proudest DIY: You can't actually see it, but there was curtain rod cover that we removed from the living room since it was blocking too much light. It wasn't easy as we had to redo part of the ceiling.

Biggest Indulgence: We have wireless speakers in every room, including the bathroom.

Best Advice: Get a humidifier with a nice selection of scents

Dream Sources: We want to change the layout and add a balcony — with so many restrictions on construction in Amsterdam it may be just a dream for the time being.
